Art

Aims

At Buryfields we are all Artists! We ensure that art is inclusive and accessible to all pupils whatever their ability or cultural background. Our school offers opportunities for the children to explore and experiment with a wide range of techniques and materials, fostering enjoyment and confidence in Art. We positively encourage professional organisations to enhance our learning and have enjoyed special whole school art events, such as The National Gallery’s ‘Take One Picture’ scheme and Arts Week.

Structure

In the Early Years, Art is taught under the specific area of Expressive arts and design, in the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. The children have free access to activities such as drawing, painting and model-making, as well as more structured Art lessons.

In Key Stage 1, the children are taught across the following areas in the National Curriculum:

  • Exploring and developing ideas
  • Investigating and making art, craft and design
  • Evaluating and developing work
  • Knowledge and understanding

Drawing is at the heart of the art curriculum at Buryfields and the children learn to draw from observation, memory and imagination. We ensure that the children experience and learn about:

  • Drawing and painting
  • Printmaking
  • Sculpture
  • Collage
  • Textiles

We focus on the progression of skills as children move up through the school.
