Guy Fawkes and the Gun Powder Plot

We thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Gun Powder Plot and how Guy Fawkes planning to kill King James I by blowing up the Houses of Parliament. Once we had heard the story we made freeze frames to show different events in the plot. Our friends were great at guessing our scene. We thought carefully about our facial expressions. We also used hot seating and conscience alley to investigate how different people were feeling at the time of the event. It was very exciting to imagine we were there! Our writing for the beginning of the term was based on Guy Fawkes, come and have a look, its really great!

We have really enjoyed studying the story of Zog by Julia Donaldson. We used drama freeze frames to demonstrate the beginning, middle and end of the story. We used the Zone of Relevance to identify adjectives that described Zog and those that were not related to him. Zog isn't like a typical dragon, he is kind, friendly and very clumsy! All he wanted was to win a golden star!  We developed and adapted the ideas from the story and have written our own Zog stories.

After spending time on Zog we decided to focus on the follow up story of Zog and the Doctors. We learnt how to use a sentence mantra to develop our accuracy in using finger spaces, full stops, capital letters and writing that makes sense. We have also written some thoughtful thank you letters to Zog and the Doctors from one of the story characters.

In science, we designed and made waterproof hats for Zog. We worked together in teams making and then tested our hats to see if they were waterproof. Miss Simons was very impressed with how we used our prior knowledge of waterproof materials and non-waterproof materials.

Number Detectives!

We have been developing our manipulation of numbers this half term by focussing on addition and subtraction. We have used lots of practical resources and games to help us. We are now confident solving and recording calculations using a number line but also being number detectives and solving problems as well. You can rely on us to help out when the number thief has been in and stolen some of our numbers our calculations. Don't forget to ask us the rules for addition and subtraction, we know them all!

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

We had a fantastic time celebrating our hard work at our Christmas party!

We would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Remember be good for Santa!

See you all in January 2017.
